Preparation is the Key to Recruit Training

Preparation is the key to training at RT Fort Custer.  Use this formula for ultimate mission success.
90% preparation + 10% execution = 100% success.
In other words.. 90% of prep is on the front end.

Prepare to make Things Happen

Apply for Training
  • Apply for Recruit Training  through the Parent Portal. If your cadet meets all of the basic requirements, your application will move up to the unit staff for registration.
Eligibility Requirements
Every training in the Naval Sea Cadets is similar but some may vary slightly based on the training.  This site will deal with Recruit Training Fort Custer specifically.
  • Print the RELEASE AND WAIVER OF LIABILITY AND INDEMNITY AGREEMENT FOR POOL
  • Age
    • Must be 13 years of age by the start of the training.
  • Training Fee
    • The training fee is made online and must be received prior to training approval. Payment can by made with credit card or PayPal.
  • PRT - Physical Fitness Test.  This is performed at your local division.  Magellan will not let you register for this training unless you have passed the PRT in the last 6 months.
  • PAC E-1 Seaman Recruit - Polaris Advancement Course.

Cadet Preparation

  • Memorize the 11 General Orders.
  • Memorize the CO's Top Six.
  • Continue to improve your PRT scores. Move everyday. Set up a schedule to run, do push-ups, and planks.
  • Break in your boots. Make sure they fit properly and are well broken in. Start wearing them now. Improper fit = blisters. Unbroken in boots = blisters.

  • Letters from Home give a big boost to cadets as they endure the demanding schedule at RT Fort Custer.
  • Letters can be dropped off on In-Take day. Address them as in the above example and dates to be delivered in the upper left corner.
  • Inspect your uniforms regularly.  Be "picky" about them.  RT is an unique environment where everything matters.  Pay particular attention to your dress uniform.  You will be photographed in this uniform and more importantly you will graduate in this uniform.  Learn how to roll your neckerchief.  Learn how to fold your uniforms into your seabag correctly.
PACKING TIPS: To speed up seabag inspection during In-Take Day place like items into zip lock bags and label contents and  amount on outside of the bag.  For example all t-shirts into one bag, label it 7 brown shirts, 1 white shirt.
Link to USNSCC PRT Uniform.
Woodland brown t-shirts by Soffe, are available on Amazon.

This YouTube video was made for a different training command and it will not reflect RT Fort Custer  sea bag requirements but it will help you prepare your uniforms and pack them correctly.

Proper Folding of the Dress White Uniform

Haircuts

Picture
All male recruits are required to have a #1 all around hair cut prior to In-Take day. You will be sent to a local barber shop if you show up without the proper haircut. Don't be that cadet.
